I Campionati Europei di Football Americano 2018 si giocheranno alla Commerzbank Arena di Francoforte. Quattro squadre si daranno battaglia per conquistare il titolo continentale nel torneo che conclude la competizione: i padroni di casa della Germania, l’Austria, seconda proprio dietro alla Germania nel Campionato Europeo 2014, la Francia e l’Italia, queste ultime due arrivate alla fase finale dopo aver vinto i rispettivi tornei di qualificazione, disputati da 15 diversi paesi. Il programma prevede le semifinali il 27 luglio 2018, mentre le finali il 29 luglio, il tutto nello stadio che è considerato il fiore all’occhiello dello sport a Francoforte.
Per i Campionati Europei di Football Americano si tratta di un ritorno alla Commerzbank Arena e a Francoforte: nel 2010, infatti, le finali vennero disputate proprio qui, con una battaglia dai toni epici tra Germania e Austria in apertura di torneo e una vittoria per 26 a 10 sempre della Germania contro la Francia nella finalissima. Ma c’è di più: in questo prestigioso stadio, nel 2008, 2009 e 2010, si è giocato il German Bowl, la finale del Campionato tedesco.
“Per la nostra Federazione, è un grande piacere poter dare risalto al nostro sport grazie ad un evento internazionale tanto prestigioso a Francoforte”, ha dichiarato Robert Huber, Presidente della Federazione tedesca, la American Football Verband Deutschland (AFVD), “E’qui che 40 anni fa è nato il football americano europeo. La città di Francoforte e lo staff della Commerzbank Arena sono da anni partner affidabili di questo sport e ci consentiranno di soddisfare un nostro grande desiderio: quello di ospitare a Francoforte, in modo competente ed assolutamente efficace, il Football Americano europeo.”
La Squadra Nazionale tedesca vanta un palmares che è già di per sé un biglietto da visita di assoluto rilievo: dal 2005 è imbattuta a livello europeo. Dopo aver vinto i Campionati Europei 2010 a Francoforte, ha replicato a Vienna nel 2014, aggiudicandosi il proprio terzo titolo continentale. In tutte le edizioni di Coppa del Mondo cui ha preso parte, la Germania si è classificata al primo posto tra le squadre europee. A livello di club, l’Eurobowl tra i Samsung Frankfurt Universe e i New Yorker Lions di Braunschweig rappresenterà il quarto campionato europeo per club consecutivo disputato da una squadra della German Football League (e l’undicesimo in totale). La squadra nazionale tedesca è inoltre una delle quattro squadre che prenderanno parte al torneo di football americano dei World Games 2017, in programma a Wroclaw (Polonia) alla fine di luglio. E nel 2005, i tedeschi hanno vinto l’oro proprio nei World Games, svoltisi a Duisburg.
Il successo del football americano in Germania riflette il grande lavoro di base svolto a livello organizzativo dalla AFVD. La federazione tedesca di football americano è una delle federazioni più dinamiche tra quelle appartenenti al DOSB, il Comitato Olimpico nazionale tedesco. Sono oltre 55.000 i tesserati della AFVD, un numero nettamente superiore a quello di qualunque altro paese europeo. Le partite dei Campionati Europei 2018 offriranno, nel contesto della Commerzbank Arena, sfide spettacolari ed un entusiasmante livello di competizione, perché il Football Americano sta crescendo non solo in Germania ma in tutto il continente.

E’ un punto di orgoglio per la FIDAF avere raggiunto il traguardo della fase finale dei Campionati Europei. Disputare il massimo torneo europeo per rappresentative nazionali in una città simbolo del football americano in Germania e in uno stadio così importante è un’occasione che rimarrà nella storia del nostro sport e del nostro movimento.
I miei più sinceri complimenti ai colleghi della federazione tedesca, e fervidi auguri ai nostri atleti e componenti dello staff tutto, impegnati nella preparazione di questo importante evento, che da tempo lavorano seriamente per rappresentare i colori azzurri
Manfredi Leone:
E’ il premio alla costanza e alla determinazione che il Settore Squadre Nazionali ha intrapreso da alcuni anni, e un riconoscimento per tutto il movimento italiano.
Nel volgere di un anno abbiamo raggiunto le finali dei Campionati Europei Under 19 che si disputano a luglio a Parigi, e le finali del massimo Campionato Europeo.
Questo è anche il frutto del lavoro e dell’impegno della Federazione per le nazionali, che intendiamo continuare a sviluppare.
Grazie a tutti i colleghi che hanno creduto in questo progetto e a tutti coloro che, spesso nell’ombra, contribuiscono ogni giorno a fare crescere tutte le nostre squadre nazionali.
Davide Giuliano:
Sono molto felice per questa opportunità: rappresentare l’Italia su un palcoscenico così importante è motivo di grande orgoglio. Mi dispiace solo di non avere potuto incrociare la Danimarca, come si sperava.
Desidero ringraziare il mio staff e tutti gli atleti che hanno fatto parte del programma in questi anni. Grazie alla FIDAF che ha investito tutte le risorse necessarie. Adesso iniziamo un anno di preparazione per essere pronti al meglio per questa occasione fantastica.

EC 2018 at Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt
The American Football European Championships 2018 will be played at the Commerzbank Arena Frankfurt. Four teams will battle for the trophy in the final tournament. The hosts from Germany will face competition from Austria, runner-up to Germany in EC 2014, France and Italy, the winner of the qualifying round played by 15 other European teams. The semi-finals at Frankfurt’s flagship sports venue will be played on 27 July 2018, the medal games on 29 July 2018.
The American Football European Championships return to the Commerzbank Arena and to Frankfurt. In 2010, the final round already had been decided here, with a fierce battle between Germany and Austria in the opener and a 26-10 win of the Germans over France in the final game. Moreover: Back in 2008, 2009 and 2010, the German Bowl, Germany’s national championship game, also was played at the Commerzbank Arena.
“For our federation, it is of great pleasure to showcase our sports through an international top event in Frankfurt,” says Robert Huber, President of the American Football Verband Deutschland (AFVD), Germany’s governing body for American football. “It was here, where European American football emerged 40 years ago. The city of Frankfurt and the staff of Commerzbank Arena have been reliable partners to American football for years. So we will be able to fulfill our ambition to be a generous and competent host for European American football in Frankfurt. ”
The German national team itself will not want to exaggerate in terms of hospitality. Since 2005 it is unbeaten against European opponents. After winning the EC 2010 at Frankfurt, it also emerged victorious in 2014 at Vienna and won its third European championship. In all World Cups Germany took part, it was the top European team. On club level the Eurobowl between Samsung Frankfurt Universe and the New Yorker Lions from Braunschweig will see the fourth consecutive European club championship for a team from the German Football League (and it’s eleventh overall). The German national team is also one of four participants in the American football competition of the World Games 2017 in Wroclaw (Poland) at the end of July. In 2005 the Germans already won the gold medal at the World Games at Duisburg.
The success of German American football also reflects the broad organizational base the AFVD has built. Germany’s football federation is one of the most dynamically growing member federations of DOSB, the governing body of German sports. More than 55,000 individual members are organized under AFVD’s roof, far more than in any other European country. The games of the European Championship 2018 at the Commerzbank Arena will offer exciting competition and spectacular plays, as American football is steadily evolving not only in Germany but throughout the whole continent.

The FIDAF is extremely proud of getting through to the final stage of the European Championship. Competing at Europe’s top national team tournament, especially when it is held in such an important stadium in a city that has come to symbolize American football in Germany, is an occasion that will go down in the history of our sport and our movement.
I wish to extend my congratulations and thanks to our colleagues from the German federation. I would also like to say best wishes to our athletes and every member of staff as they have worked so hard and long to prepare for this important event and honor Team Italy.
Manfredi Leone:
Being part of this event is a reward for the national team division’s perseverance and determination over the past few years, and recognition of the entire movement in Italy.
In the space of a year we have reached the finals of the European Under 19 Championships, which will be held in Paris in July, and the finals of the top European Championship.
These achievements are in part thanks to the federation’s work and commitment to the national teams, something on which we will continue to build going forward.
I wish to thank all our colleagues who believed in this project, and everyone that works hard every day, and often behind the scenes, to help all our national teams grow and improve.
HC Davide Giuliano:
I’m over the moon about this opportunity: I’m so proud to be representing Italy on such an important stage, I’m only sorry that we didn’t get to play Denmark as we’d hoped.
