“Sì, ci tengo molto a farlo!

ENGLISH VERSION

Few days are left before the Estra Guelfi Firenze and the Seamen Milano will clash in the Italian Bowl (kickoff saturday July 6th at 9pm Italian time) Coach Briles released an interview to the Guelfi Firenze official website. The leader of the Guelfi Firenze analyzed the season that brought him back on the football field after his previous experience as the Head Coach of the Baylor Bears. The Texas native talked about the incoming final, the first in the team history, and about other topics as Silas Nacita and his experience in Italy and his future. These are the words of one of the unquestioned idols of the #GuelfiFamily.

What did you do to change the mindset of this team to turn it into a group that will play in the Italian bowl?

If you don’t believe you can never achieve, so I think without a question starting back in the fall we started talking about playing for the championship and winning the championship. This to the players back then was like saying Santa Claus was real, you can hardly believe it. So, that’s where it all started. Then after you have a couple of good things happen to you and win a couple of games people didn’t think you could win, then that belief becomes a reality and then you just ride the momentum from there. And that’s what we’ve done all season, we rode the momentum. The two games we haven’t won have been the last play of the game deciding it, so we’ve proven throughout the season we’re a really good football team. The two best teams are in the championship”.

When did the players start to believe in their abilities and their chances to win the title? When did the season really change for Guelfi?

I think it all started when we beat Parma, it was the first time ever beating Parma. And then I think when we played with Milan that closely and they beat us in the last play of the game, I think they saw then, ‘Hey, we can play with anybody. We can beat anybody.’ And the same thing at Balzano up there the first time, the last play of the game to win it. And then winning the playoff game for the first time in history and then beating Balzano for the first time in history and going to the finals. I mean, all those things just add to the belief but to answer your question, I’d say when we were down 17-0 and beat Parma that’s when they thought, ‘Hey, this may be different“.

What do you think about football in Italy, a sport based on the effort of workers, fathers, and students who give it all to play the sport they love?

It’s unbelievable. It’s been a very heartwarming and rewarding experience for me personally because I love the game, I love to coach the game, I love the players that play the game, and these guys play the game for the love of the game. So everybody’s just doing this because they love football. Nobody’s getting rewarded financially or professionally. The reward is the preparation, the effort, and the outcome”.

What can decide the game in Milano at the Italian Bowl?

“You know, it’s just like every other game, fundamental turnovers and field position. I mean, we’ll have to play extremely clean and we know that, and they’ll have to play extremely clean if they want a chance to beat us. We need to win the kicking game, we need to be good on offense, and bend a little but don’t break on defense. Then we’ll be fine. I don’t know what people are saying about the game, but to me it’s a toss-up game”.

Do you think the career of Silas Nacita would have been different without the NCAA rule breaking?

That’s a speculation. And I don’t want to bring up anything negative on him, which it’s really not negative. It was just a misunderstanding. But Silas has had a great career. He was on the path to have a great career in America but this has turned out to be a very great for him from a worldly standpoint, the travel standpoint, which he probably never would’ve done. I wouldn’t have either, and so it’s refreshing and inspiring to see how many good people there are in the world. I’ve learned a lot from being in Italy just about Italy’s culture and how they interact with each other and others. So it’s been a great benefit for him as it has been for me”.

What are you going to miss the most from Florence and your Italian life? And are you considering to rejoin for 2020?

“What I’ll miss of course is always what you miss out of any profession or job or anywhere you spend your time is the people. It’s all about the people. So, what I will miss are the people because I’ve made some really, really good friends and close associations with not only the players but the coaches and some of their families. So, I’ll cherish those memories and look at the pictures and smile and who knows what the future holds? You know, I’ve quit predicting the future. I’m just living day to day. I know where I’m going to be in the Fall, but next Spring I don’t know where I’m going to be so I’m just thankful for today and I’m going to try to live it to the fullest”.

Is there something you want to say to our fans?

At Balzano last week we had a great crowd, they were very loud and really helped. Just appreciate their support and positive attitude. Everything has been really positive and that’s hard to get in any walk of life, in particular football. I feel grateful and blessed everyday to be part of Guelfi Firenze“.
